General Surgeon – Breast and Endocrine Specialist
Ruth Bollard is a General surgeon, and Specialist breast and oncoplastic surgeon, whose practice comprises mostly of breast work, encompassing the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of all benign and malignant conditions of the breast and surveillance and prophylactic surgery for high-risk groups.
Having trained in the UK at internationally renowned breast units, she gained extensive experience in reconstructive breast surgical techniques. She then worked as a consultant General surgeon in the United Kingdom for a period of five years, establishing a Breast Service in 2001 providing rapid-access integrated, patient-centered care, delivered by a multidisciplinary team including full-time breast care nurses, and developing a reconstructive oncoplastic breast surgery service. She moved to Ballarat in 2006 and has established the same service providing care for the Grampians and Ballarat communities.
Ruth is able to offer surgery to patients in Ballarat and Ararat in both the public and private sectors.
Interests: general surgical patients for Thyroid, Hernia, Varicose veins, Cholecystectomy, Carpal Tunnel, minor skin lesions, anal problems, Colonoscopy and Gastroscopy. And all breast surgery patients for breast cancer, reconstruction, and breast reduction, as well as cosmetic breast improvement operations including nipple reconstruction, nipple tattooing, and breast augmentation.
She has interests in breast reconstruction and breast reduction approaches to treating breast cancer, including sentinel lymph node biopsy. The organisation and delivery of multidisciplinary breast cancer care is her priority, including the use of neo-adjuvant or pre-operative chemotherapy. As a leader in surgery, she was Director of Grampians Integrated Cancer Services from 2012-2016. During this time, she implemented the local Regional Breast Cancer Guidelines to assist in coordination of best breast cancer care.
Ruth has an interest in the treatment of screen detected breast cancers, and has an appointment at Breast screen Victoria.
Recently Ruth has been appointed to represent the College of Surgeons of Australasia on the intercollegiate committee for Cancer Australia.
Her particular area of special interest and expertise is in “oncoplastic” breast surgery, aimed at maximising the cosmetic result following breast conservation surgery for breast cancer using advanced surgical techniques. These skills include the use of breast reduction and breast lift techniques, implant reconstruction, Lipomodelling and LD Flap reconstruction. She continues to strive to improve this service in Ballarat.
Ruth’s second surgical specialty is in Thyroid and Parathyroid surgery for both benign and cancer patients. She provides coordinated care of these patients though the cancer head and neck multidisciplinary cancer meeting.

The Women in Surgery Section was established in 2011. The function of which is to provide a source of advice and guidance for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in relation to gender and Trainee issues. While recognizing gender issues in training and the surgical workforce, the committee also aims to develop guidelines and policies to combat the numerous issues faced by all individuals in the surgical field. Specific focus areas include leadership, mentoring and flexible training. The section has created a 5-year strategic plan. We have also written an article on flexible surgical training that was published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Surgery in December 2012.

Ruth is asked to speak regularly for various medical organizations, GP education, hospitals and other community groups.
Awarded to the Honor Role of ‘Ballarat Great Women’ March 2016 by The Zonta Club. An acknowledgement for contribution to Ballarat Community.
Key note speaker for ZONTA International at their Ballarat conference in 2009, and was invited back as Keynote Guest Speaker for the ZONTA International women’s day Dinner at Ballarat Golf club on 8th March 2012 to talk about her career and achievements.
